MidCentury Modern Farm House

Midcentury meets Modern in this family-friendly farmhouse. Our goal was to energize a dark and antiquated Dutch estate into a light-filled, unconventional, but approachable home for our clients’ growing and extended family. The client wanted to keep the authentic, Dutch exterior, but transform the interior into a statement of their personal style packed with levity, color, mixed materials, progressive art and highly-patterned fabrication. Our focus was to weave their bold point of view in a consistent fashion throughout the house, while maintaining balance and an ode to the farmhouse’s rustic bones.

The large, wide plank floors were a must-stay (although re-stained to a more rustic brown), as well as the wood doors, living room millwork, fireplace and the true divide double hung windows throughout. Enhancements were made to the ceiling beams in the great room and beam additions were made in the mudroom and kitchen. We also sourced fireclay red brick for the mudroom, and added sliding barn doors and shiplap with perfect nickel gap spacing on the kitchen ceiling.

The airy foyer serves as the resting point for the adjoining great room and two rooms that flank it. Purple orchids are the only pop of color that bring the guest to the great room, showcasing navy, fuchsia, yellow and cream. In the kitchen, a large island is stained in an oil-based black finish and completed with extra wide X’s on each end. The high-maintenance Calacatta marble is only one of the many risks the client took to achieve a greater design aesthetic. The matte black hood was custom made with brass strappings to complement the metal finishes, and the opaque milk glass in the cabinetry is a fresh alternative to regular glass. Next to the kitchen is the sitting area with two slouchy, midcentury leather chairs opposite the custom steel fireplace.
